Glasgow-based artist, Irineu Destourelles and curator Natalia Palombo will be in conversation in The Common Guild’s Library to discuss 'Thirty-two Texts with Distress’, a solo exhibition by Destourelles currently on view at the nearby Gorbals Public Library, and Destourelles upcoming project for Glasgow International.
The exhibition presents two interlinked video works, ‘Thirty-two Texts Concerning Different Spaces’ and ‘Distressed Animal’, which revisit personal memories of being in public spaces around Glasgow and elsewhere, alongside reflections on how public spaces are represented in media. 'Thirsty-two Texts with Distress’ was commissioned by Many Studios and curated by Natalia Palombo as part of the redevelopment of the former Cumberland Street Station.
Destourelles’ work engages language as both subject and material — fractured, re-assembled and made visual across text, sound and installation. His conversation with Palombo will explore how the dialogue between artist and curator shapes ideas, structures projects and becomes a form of writing in itself. The discussion will reflect on joint projects including 'Does it Fall from the Skies Above?' and 'Thirty-two Texts with Distress', considering how conversation, process and partnership influence the final form of artworks.
About Irineu Destourelles /
Irineu Destourelles works with moving image, text, drawing, and performance to explore the complexities of internal multiplicity. Rooted in his Creole background, his practice reflects the experience of being between languages, places, and histories. His work examines how identity is shaped by translation, memory, and the internalisation of colonial narratives, questioning how otherness continues to be constructed in contemporary life.
Destourelles trained at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and Central Saint Martins in London, and holds a PhD in Film Studies from University College London. Solo exhibitions include 'Subtitulizar / Subtitling’, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; 'The Beat That Makes You Dirty’, CAPC, Coimbra; and Tainted Verbal, Transmission, Glasgow.
He is currently included in 'Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica’, MACBA, Barcelona and his solo exhibition for Glasgow International 2026, curated by Natalia Palombo and Outer Spaces, is forthcoming.
